Shannon K. Butcher was nice enough to join us for a little Q&A session this evening. Here are both mine and Sky’s questions and Shannon’s answers 🙂 She is a very delightful and down to earth person, I was very happy to of had the opportunity to talk with her. Thanks to the girls at ‘Kick who put this fun event together!
Thanks again for joining Shannon 🙂
Who/What was your biggest inspiration growing up, that inspired you to write the stories that you do?
When you go out with your friends do you talk to them about your books, ask them for ideas/opinions with certain scenes?
Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night having dreamed up ideas for your books and write them down?
I dream about stories all the time. In fact, there are often alternate stories running around in my head, and sometimes hard to remember which one ended up in the book. And then there are those dreams with me and Madoc…Don’t tell Nika. 🙂
I have a bunch of writer friends and we talk shop quite a bit, but surprisingly, it’s less about the actual stories and more about the business side of things. Contracts, deadlines, revisions, conventions…all of the things that other writers tend to get more than non-writers.
Sometimes I’ll mull over an idea with a friend or two, but that usually ends up being more of a one-sided conversation than a discussion. It’s amazing how things become clear when you say them out loud.
As far as inspirations growing up, I’d have to say my parents were really the biggest influences on me, even though I never had any intention of becoming a writer. Mom actually read romances and was the artistic one. Dad was more practical. While he’s wildly creative, what he really taught me was a solid work ethic. Protestant work ethic? In my house, we made those guys look like slackers. 🙂
My questions have already been asked, but I wanted to thank you for such a wonderful tale! I wish we had more men like them in our real world haha. (Like Thomas *sniffles*)
I guess one question would be, is that if anything specfic inspired the idea for the Luceria and ring. It’s such a intricate way to hold a bond, and such a genius idea!
I can’t think of any specific thing that inspired the luceria. It’s one of those things that came out of my brain soup–a messy mix of all kinds of nerdy stuff.
Lover Unbound by J.R. Ward
I gave this one a 3.5 Star Rating
Thru-out all of Wards other BDB books, V had sooooooooooo much potential to be .. just more. His relationship with Butch (Cop) O’neal and the things that they said back and forth to each other really gave me some “Whoa” moments. I did think that he and Jane were sweet together. I liked her spunkiness. An example that made me like her more was when she got into wanting to help carve her name into V’s back since she’s a surgeon and good with knives.
I did like learning about V’s history with his mother and father. I didn’t see it coming when it was revealed who his mother was. The whole idea of the Primale and rebuilding the brotherhood is interesting..
I just kind of felt like this book was rushed, I wish it could have been about … I don’t know 50-100 pages more. At the end of the book when there were like 10-15 pages to spare.. Their HEA was written pretty quick-like. I was thinking to myself how in the world can this end the way it is, poor V.. Then Boom, problem solved, the end..
At some points in the book I was more interested in John Matthew and Phury, and I hate that .
Really enjoyed this story, it starts out with Alyssa who’s a very sought after graphics design artist that’s recently been hired on at one of Toronto’s largest firms as art director. She’s having a rough morning because she’s due to give a presentation and one of the owners of the company Mark Young will be there. Mark always has the last say as to what goes and what doesn’t. It also doesn’t help that ever since she got hired on two weeks ago she’s been having some intense dreams about a man she’s never met but does oh so wonderful things to her.
A little while later during the meeting she starts feeling a strange vibrating hum underneath her skin. With every second that passes they get more and more intense until the doors open and Mark Young comes bursting thru them. She then realized that he is the man she’s been dreaming about.. Her life changes drastically after that moment. I would of loved to have been a fly on the wall when he was standing in the doorway, eyes focused solely on her and he tells everyone except her to get out of the boardroom.. That to me was a pretty H-O-T moment. Hating the thought that now everyone in the office probably thinks that he is either dissatisfied with her work or they have something going on between them he assures her that he loves her work, and that there is something personal between them, she just doesn’t know it yet. Then after they talk for a bit he tells her if anything unusual happens to her, to give him a call.. I love how Ms. Lupton uses this mysterious/cryptic way to get the story started!
I Couldn’t put the book down for long that’s for sure, I had to know what was going to happen next with Mark and Alyssa and how their journey would end. Loveable characters, interesting plot, great ideas!
I also liked how the author threw in what movies they watched or music they were listening to, those are actually favorites of mine. Would love to have more, especially about the Brothers.
I absolutely found this book to be adorable. It was a quick, fun, and delightful read.
In the beginning of the book you have the Greek Gods Dionysus and Eryx bickering to each other that the god of wine “Dionysus” spends too much time gallivanting around with his booze and ladies, while the god of love “Eryx” wastes his time posing as mortals in the human realm pretending to be either a museum curator, professor, writer, or archaeologist. He just wants to ensure that the humans are doing the Greek Gods justice by making sure they have all their facts straight about their “myths” and handle their treasures properly. – Reading the first chapter alone I knew that I loved Ms. Leo’s humor and that this was going to be an entertaining read.
This time Eryx decides to take on the role of becoming the new director of The Toronto Museum. He thought that since it’s in the middle of renovations and that they have a nice sized inventory of Greek valuables, they could use his help. I fell in love with him very easily from the descriptive words the author uses to describe him (swooooon) and his charming personality/attitude. The things he says to Maia will make your heart flutter a lot!
Maia Douglas is a funny, witty, quirky, dorky, awkward and beautiful girl who is a curator at the Toronto Museum. Her father Dr. Jim Douglas is a famous archaeologist who’d founded most of the Greek collection housed in this museum so this is basically Maia’s second home. Word is getting around that the new Director Eric Lord will be arriving soon and that he is pretty ruthless when it comes to “cleaning house”. It’s no secret that she’s very fond of the Greek statue Eryx The God of Love in the Greek section of the museum, so when the God himself walks in the museum in his mortal guise as Eric Lord, I’d love to have seen the look on her face thinking the man of her dreams has come true!
I loved this character and immediately identified with her for her awkwardness and loved that she was passionate for things others would deem her for being a geek. More people need to be like this instead of thinking they need to hide what they love doing from others!!
There were some great lines/thoughts in this book that had me laughing out loud and rereading them after I’d stopped laughing just to start laughing again..
-“Last I heard he was farming cattle somewhere.” He rolled his eyes. “He’s always been curiously fond of cows.” – Talking about the Greek God Zeus
-Death by chicken wing seemed like such a strange way to go. – Maia
-Maia had seen a lot of flamboyant gay bars. This one was flaming hotter than a pink flamingo on fire.
Will definitely recommend this to a friend and continue on with the series, Thanks Rosanna Leo for a great read:)
Knight by Kristen Ashley
I thought this was a deliciously fast fun read. This author definitely knows how to raise your eyebrows at some seriously HOT moments, and has some great one-liners to add to this mix..
Story starts off with a typical girl at a party her friend dragged her to. This party is hosted at Knight Sebring’s swanky apartment, only Knight didn’t invite all of these people to the party.. His brother did. Anya wants to leave and finds herself in a sexy-scary situation, her cell phone is a piece of garbage and won’t hold a charge for longer than an hour so she goes to find her coat to leave and taxi it home and ends up seeing the next best thing, which is a land line. Only when she starts to use it she realizes that she’s in a very pissed off Knight Sebring’s bedroom.
From the first moment they meet Knight is this demanding, controlling, sexual man that can’t get enough of Anya. The things that come out of this mans mouth make you want Anya to tell him to get lost, but at the same time want her to just stay with him.
I like how the author describes Anya as a normal not model perfect woman. The scene where She and Knight are in bed naked for the first time and she describes her Buddha belly to him I almost DIED LAUGHING!!! That was hysterical, and it gives us other Buddha belly owning (too many beers) women hope of finding a man like Knight =)
**********SPOILER ALERT BELOW********
I was shocked near the end of the book to learn that Knight (given his past) has some extracurricular activities on the side with running his Club. Interesting how that turns out, I get it tho, he familiarizes himself with that nature since he grew up in that world so he would more or less think of himself as “Protecting” the women and trying to make their jobs easier on them, rather than them walking the streets unprotected. Like a high end Madame service only run by a handsome dominant.
The end of the story didn’t quite suit my expectations because I was hoping he would change his ways and break a few of his rules for Anya and marry her. I did like that he loved knowing he was going to be a father, and that it was a baby girl instead of what he wanted which was a boy haha:).
Sexy and Sweet
I always liked Butch “Hard-Ass” O’neal since the first book of the BDB Series. His smart ass attitude, gravely voice she makes him have, doesn’t take crap from anyone, love it! Thru the books she makes it seem like he could have been just as equally tortured as Zsadist was. Ward fills us in on why Butch’s family has always despised him and then wraps it up in the end.
I kind of want to write this up as a Butch and Vishous love story with Marissa who?!? These two have so much strange sexual tension between them it was comical and maybe somewhat disturbing. I told my friend who also read the book that it would have been hilarious if J.R. Ward went ahead and set up a little three way action between Butch, Vishous, and Marissa just to get it over with. =P
I am glad that the cop finally got his family he had been missing his whole life and that he’s officially a part of the Brotherhood. I liked how the author described the induction ceremony for the BDB.
Pretty neat to learn about when the Lessers go all poppin and bright flashes of light that they just go back to be a part of the Omega, and that they’re a part of his life source. So with Butch having this “Special Ability” he’ll able to put a stop to the Omega once and for all. Poor little Mr. X tho, all the guy wants is to end his miserable existence and be done with the Omega lol.. This guy’s going to need his own book when everything’s all said and done Haha!!
I think it would have been a little better if Marissa would own up to the fact that, “Yes, the person you are in love with hangs out and helps the brotherhood, yes he is going to fight and be put in danger from time to time, and yes he does love you. Put on your big girl panties and deal with it!! Kind of straddled on going over the top with her dramatic self, but she was apart of the Glymera so it’s in her breeding to be that way I guess.
I miss Tohr and can’t wait to hear more about what’s happened/happening to him..
Ahhhhhh I’m so excited about tonight! The moderators of this Goodreads group that Sky and I are in worked very hard to see this happen for us ! It will be from 7:00-9:00 pm est for the group “Gotta have Paranormal Romance with a Kick”.
Sky ~~~ Hi there Ms.Ione! I’ve been looking forward to this for a while, it’s an honor to be able to chat with such a talented lady as yourself =) I only had one question today, a silly one. I love cuddling up in bed and reading, and most often my hubby is lying next to me, he doesn’t read at all, so I’ll be playful and read to him chapters from different books. I love to see his reaction to the things I’ve read him from this genre! I guess he never expects something like that could be “read”, rather than be “watched” haha
I guess I just wonder, with so many WELL described erotica scenes, and of, well…male member lengths, has your husband ever read or heard any chapters, scenes and such from your novels, and how does he react? Great approval on his side I hope =D
Krystle ~~ Squeee!! Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to hang out with us Larissa! I fell in love with your Demonica and LoD series over this past summer, and I’ve been spreading your name around to my friends like wild fire ever since!
I actually read “Pleasure Unbound” when I took my first plane ride (by myself), so you pretty much kept my mind at ease during that adventure. So a big THANKS for that 🙂 Like you I am a huge animal lover, which is why I groom dogs for a living and I love all of the pictures you put up on Facebook of your king shepherd “Hexe”. She’s gorgeous and seems to love life!
1. I’m going to be a little naughty here and ask what I have been wondering about for a while haha.. When your write your naughty scenes in your book, do you ever ask your hubby for ideas so you can get a males perspective to go with yours? =P
2. With your dogs name being “Hexe” which clearly goes with the style of your writing, are you ever going to use it in any of your books as a character name?
The Temptation of Your Touch
Poor Maximillian seems to be having the worst of luck. First he gets jilted at the alter by the woman he’s longed for since childhood for his younger brother. Then while in a drunken stupor he defends his new sister in laws honor by challenging a man to a duel when he hears him defile her good name.
What’s a man of propriety to do when stripped of his pride, but get away from the gossip in the city and take on managing the most remote property in his family’s extensive holdings out in the country. Cadgwyck Manor comes fully and incompetently staffed, with its greatest boon of all, its own ghost! Score! What he wasn’t prepared for tho, was the witty housekeeper, Anne.
The staff and housekeeper do not like newcomers in their home, especially when they’ve had their minds set on a certain endeavor for quite a while.. They’ve had great success with sending all the other Lords who’ve come to live at the manor out the door with no problem. One by scaring the wits out of him and the other met his untimely demise. They never exptected hard headed Maximillian Burke. This man can not be shaken by their clever attempts make the shamble of a manor seem haunted.
Teresa Medeiros does not disappoint with this Historical Romance. She dazzles you with such detail you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time and are watching everything she writes down come to life. What a great follow up to “The Pleasure of Your Kiss”. **I loved the cameos Ashton and Clarinda made in this book as well!!**
Okay so Rhage (Hollywood) and Mary’s story was really sweet. Didn’t really know how Ward was going to come up with a HEA for these two but she does it yet again 🙂
Rhage is the strongest of the warriors of the BDB due to a curse the Scribe Virgin sets upon him because of his selfish ways. The Beast (his curse) keeps him in check for the most part. On the outside it’s a Dragon tattooed on his back. What resides within him tho is much scarier. He controls the beast by fighting or having meaningless sex. If he loses control, something very very bad happens. Lets just say shiny bright lights and take your pick of a Godzilla movie…. But I think it’s pretty cool that Rhage turns into a Godzilla/Dragon’esk type creature when he gets pissed off/sexually frustrated. Sure does help out with the Lessers. You sort of get a preview of this in the previous book “Dark Lover”.
In the beginning of the book we learn that Mary has been diagnosed with Leukemia, she works for a law office, and volunteers at a suicide hotline center some nights thru the week. Someone keeps calling her at the hotline, but they never speak to her. She tries to reach out to them but still all she receives is silence. Later on one of those nights after working at the call center while she’s at home in her backyard she realizes she’s not alone. With her is a young man, he startles her of course then he lets her know that he can’t speak but knows ASL. Luckily for him so does she. This is the person that’s been calling Mary..A little later we find out he’s been having certain dreams that normal humans don’t have… or are they memories??. From reading Dark Lover, I’m pretty sure John here is a certain cameo so to speak…don’t want to give away any spoilers if I’m right about this … But I hope I am!!!!
I like Mary’s friend Bella, she’s about as sweet as a vampire friend a human girl can have lol. Mary also doesn’t know that her friend is a vampire. Bella’s the reason Mary and Rhage meet in the first place. After Bella meets John and see’s what kind of writing is on a bracelet he’s wearing she knows that he is of her kind, but that he’s a part of the brotherhood in some way. (*Since John’s in his early 20’s he hasn’t gone thru the transition yet, even he doesn’t know what he is, but Bella knows if she doesn’t get him help he will not survive the change.) All Rhage has to do is hear Mary’s sweet melodic voice and he’s drawn to her like a moth to the flame.
–Bella has a rather awkward introduction to Zsadist while they’re introducing John to the Brotherhood. He’s so raw and menacing I love it, and so does she!
–Butch is a returning character in this book and I’m so happy for that. His character is adorable..
I like how Ward doesn’t make the males all seem like they’re “Hard Asses” towards their love interest in her books, sure they’re all intense warriors but not to their females. She’s shows their insecurities and weaknesses. And the fact that Mary doesn’t have a Swimsuit models body also makes it seem believable or more real..
The Lessers….. In this book we learn more about Mr. O ( David Ormund), I really don’t know whether to hate the guy immensely or just flat out feel sorry for him lol. Clearly you can see he really hates what he is. Calls himself a, “Soulless Thing.” But he’s really good at what he does…Maybe too good.. So Not sure, but clearly he has some issues forgetting the love of his life Jennifer. This guy is all sorts of effed up…Poor Bella gets caught up in the middle of that. Can’t wait for Zsadist to go after Mr. O and get his woman back =P. I’m going to love their story. Glad it’s next!!!!
Pretty gross that the Omega takes the hearts out of the humans during the induction ceremony into the Lessening Society and then keeps them in jars. The BDB likes to take the jars after they kill the Lessers and keeps them as their trophies haha..
Great Character line up, plot, with a lot of smutty goodness. I gave it 5 Stars 🙂 .
